Chinese authorities have officially confirmed that all 33 missing Latvian tourists were on the Tibetan side of the China-Nepal border when deadly floods and mudslides struck Gyirong on Aug. 26, the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told LETA on Friday. The ministry added that there is no evidence the travelers crossed back into Nepal before the disaster.

Chinese officials have requested DNA samples from Latvia to aid identification efforts, as belongings of the missing were found near the border crossing on the Chinese side. The ministry is coordinating with Red Cross DNA experts, who are expected in Nepal this week to assist with comparisons. Jurgis Barkans, a consular representative in Nepal, is also arranging the transport of the tourists’ belongings left in hotels back to Latvia, pending assessment and identification.

The ministry emphasized the need for relatives to receive official missing-person notifications, which are required for formalities. A meeting with families is scheduled for Wednesday to clarify procedures, with support from the Ombudsman’s office. Authorities urged relatives not on the contact list to reach out for updates.

Earlier, Yang Qiqiao, deputy head of Shigatse’s fire and rescue service in Tibet, described the devastation at Gyirong to CCTV. The five-story border station and a 20-meter-high gate were buried under mud and debris, with no signs of survivors. Rescue teams found only a torn police vest and reinforcing bars amid the wreckage. At least 1,430 people are confirmed dead in Nepal and China, with 5,500 still missing.
