North Korea fires ballistic missile off east coast, Japan and South Korea confirm
North Korea fired a ballistic missile into the sea off its east coast on Sunday, Japan’s defense ministry and [South Korea’s](en.wikipedia.org) military confirmed. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the projectile was launched from near the coastal area of Wonsan, while Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported it landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
The launch follows a week of heightened tensions, including North Korea’s dismissal on Saturday of a U.N. nuclear watchdog resolution condemning its nuclear program, according to state media. Pyongyang had also condemned a U.S.-led naval drill involving South Korea and Japan, which concluded on Sept. 10 near Guam.
South Korea’s presidential office convened a National Security Council meeting in response, reiterating a previous warning that such tests violate U.N. Security Council resolutions. The missile firing is the second in a week, part of an escalation in weapons testing despite U.S. efforts to revive diplomacy. U.S. President Donald Trump had recently scaled back a military exercise with South Korea, but North Korea’s Kim Yo Jong, sister of leader Kim Jong Un, said on Friday that U.S.-led drills were worsening tensions and vowed no change in the country’s nuclear policy.
