NATO jets shoot down Russian drone over Lithuania, president confirms

NATO fighter jets shot down a drone in Lithuanian airspace on Monday evening, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda confirmed. “I thank Allied personnel for their swift response,” Nausėda wrote on X. “With Russia intensifying its aggression against Ukraine, such readiness is vital for our region. Together with our NATO Allies, Lithuania will defend its airspace.”
Lithuania borders Russia’s Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus, a close Moscow ally. The country has felt particularly threatened since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, according to Lithuanian government statements. Lithuanian military intelligence has information suggesting Russia may be considering attacks on critical infrastructure in the Baltic states, officials said.
Germany is currently building up a German armored brigade in Lithuania, a combat-ready force of 4,800 troops expected to be operational by 2027, according to dpa reporting.
