Poland and Lithuania prepare joint civilian evacuation through Suwalki Gap amid attack threat
Poland and Lithuania are jointly preparing plans for the mass evacuation of civilians from the Baltic region through the Suwalki Gap in the event of an attack, according to reports on Sunday.
A delegation of about 20 Lithuanian officials has been sent to Poland to coordinate procedures, logistics, and infrastructure, including evacuation routes, with Polish counterparts, said Vilmantas Vitkauskas, director of Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Center. Vitkauskas noted that border control regimes may change during a crisis to ensure mobilization and restrict the departure of key personnel, requiring advance coordination to prevent bottlenecks at crossing points .
Lithuanian authorities have also outlined domestic evacuation plans. Vilnius officials identified potential routes, including toward the Polish border, with one scenario directing residents to the Alytus region near Sejny, Poland, via national road 16. However, the Via Baltica highway, a key NATO supply route, was not listed among the primary evacuation corridors, according to local reports .
The Suwalki Gap, a narrow land corridor between Poland and Lithuania, holds particular strategic and logistical importance in the joint planning, Vitkauskas emphasized .
