Tottenham Hotspur suffered a second consecutive Premier League defeat on Saturday, losing 2–0 to Newcastle at home to open the season with zero points and no goals scored. Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa netted for Newcastle, with Elanga’s strike marking his second in two games this term after a 2025–26 campaign in which he featured in 32 league matches without scoring. Pundits reacted sharply: Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports said the start “could not have gone worse,” while former England goalkeeper Rob Green on BBC Sport called it “horrendous. Elsewhere, Liverpool rescued a 2–2 draw at Anfield against Nottingham Forest, with new signing Victor Muñoz scoring a late equalizer in Andoni Iraola’s first home league game as manager. Forest had led twice, but Muñoz’s goal ensured Liverpool avoided defeat. Iraola later criticized a fourth official’s error that he believed cost his side a penalty .

In the Bundesliga, Eintracht Frankfurt and Union Berlin played to a 3–3 draw in their season opener. Younes Ebnoutalib scored a hat trick for Frankfurt, but two late Union goals, including one from Leopold Querfeld, secured the point. Querfeld, linked with a Premier League move, acknowledged a defensive error that contributed to Frankfurt’s early lead before his equalizer. Meanwhile, Chelsea completed the signing of Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa for £7.5 million on a three-year deal, marking the eighth transfer between the clubs in four years. Martínez, who won the 2022 World Cup, made 256 appearances for Villa and helped the club win the Europa League last season. He told Chelsea’s website, “Coming to Chelsea was an easy decision. I want to be successful here” .
