Leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will meet in Cardiff on Monday to sign a memorandum of understanding pushing for independence referendums in their respective nations.
Scottish National Party leader John Swinney, Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth and Sinn Féin vice president Michelle O’Neill are expected to sign the agreement in their capacities as party leaders, not government officials. Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald will also attend. The memorandum will call on Westminster to “prepare, plan and facilitate constitutional change in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland,” according to The Guardian .
Swinney stated that for the first time, all three nations are led by pro-independence first ministers, adding that Westminster must prepare for a post-UK future. He also said British Prime Minister Andy Burnham could be remembered as the last UK prime minister, following Burnham’s remarks that a new Scottish referendum remains “off limits” despite earlier suggesting it could occur with “clear consensus” .
The summit follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s weekend remarks in Ireland, where he expressed support for a united Ireland, calling it “a fantastic thing.” The intervention drew a rebuttal from the UK government and unionist leaders in Northern Ireland .
