Five Cambuur fans injured as Feyenoord supporters fire fireworks into stands during Dutch league match
SC Cambuur confirmed on Monday that 7 supporters suffered injuries, including burns, hearing damage and eye injuries, after Feyenoord fans threw fireworks during Sunday’s Eredivisie match at the Kooi Stadion in Leeuwarden.
The game was suspended for about 10 minutes in the first half when visiting supporters in the away end lit red flares and launched fireworks, some of which were directed at sections holding Cambuur fans. One firework exploded on the pitch near Feyenoord goalkeeper Tjark Ernst, who narrowly avoided being hit, according to Feyenoord general manager Robert Eenhoorn. The club said it “firmly distances itself from the unacceptable events” and that head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst apologized to Cambuur after the match .
Cambuur stated it would work with authorities to identify those responsible and file criminal complaints. Leeuwarden Mayor Foort van Oosten condemned the incident and promised an investigation, while the Dutch football association, KNVB, said it would review its protocols for disorder. The match resumed and ended in a 5-2 victory for Feyenoord, though KNVB manager Jan Bluyssen said the game would have been abandoned had a player or official been struck. “That doesn’t feel right,” Bluyssen told Dutch news agency ANP. “We need to examine whether the protocol is still appropriate and how we might want to adjust it” .
Eenhoorn called the incident “simply terrible” and acknowledged frustration overshadowed the win. “This problem obviously does not only affect Feyenoord and is unfortunately something we have been unable to put a stop to for decades,” he said, adding the club would request camera footage to assist investigations .
The KNVB later clarified that its current protocol for match stoppages applies only to incidents involving players, staff or officials, leaving fans outside its scope . Cambuur updated its initial count of five injured fans to seven on Monday .
