BUDAPEST — The first World Athletics Ultimate Championship crowned its winners on Saturday, with top prizes of $150,000 awarded in each event.
Kenneth Bednarek of the United States won the men’s 100 meters in 9.85 seconds, edging Jamaica’s Oblique Seville, who finished in 9.90. The race unfolded in front of a packed crowd, with retired sprint legends Usain Bolt and Noah Lyles watching from the stands .
Melissa Jefferson-Wooden dominated the women’s 100 meters, clocking a world-leading 10.62 seconds to defeat Olympic champion Julien Alfred of St. Lucia, who ran 10.74. The victory secured Jefferson-Wooden the top prize and settled a three-week, best-of-three series between the reigning Olympic and world champions .
Switzerland’s Audrey Werro won the women’s 800 meters in 1:55.88, holding off Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson (1:56.26) and the Netherlands’ Femke Broeders-Bol (1:56.74). Hodgkinson later revealed she had competed despite a torn hamstring .
Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou took the men’s long jump with a leap of 8.35 meters, narrowly defeating Bulgaria’s Saraboyukov, who managed 8.34 .
