Italy earthquake injures 26, damages buildings near Naples as aftershocks continue
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck off the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island on Sunday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences. The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, and authorities reported no immediate casualties or structural damage .
In Japan, the death toll from last week’s magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Kumamoto prefecture rose to 38, with more than 9,200 displaced residents remaining in evacuation shelters, Japanese authorities confirmed on Sunday. An elderly woman died of apparent heatstroke while taking shelter in a car, marking the latest fatality from the disaster .
A seismic swarm near Naples, Italy, included a magnitude 4.7 earthquake on Friday, the strongest in the area in about 40 years, followed by dozens of aftershocks, including one of magnitude 3.8. The National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology recorded over 100 weaker tremors. Italy’s Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci warned that further shocks above magnitude 3 could occur. Authorities reported 26 injuries, with five people hospitalized, two in serious condition. Over 300 people were evacuated after buildings were deemed uninhabitable, and damage included collapsed walls, fallen facades, and crushed cars .
In China, the death toll from a flash flood that struck the Shuangshimen tourist area in Gansu province on July 26 rose to 25, with 23 others injured, state media reported on Sunday. The flood, which hit a popular camping and hiking site, prompted the rescue of 174 people. China’s National Commission for Disaster Prevention announced it would oversee the investigation into the disaster. The same province had previously recorded 21 deaths from a landslide in early July .
Heavy rains and flooding have affected multiple Chinese regions, with authorities issuing level 4 emergency response alerts in Heilongjiang, Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Henan, and Hubei provinces. In Heilongjiang, 19 rivers exceeded alert levels, with the Sandaohezi River reaching its highest recorded flood levels since 1958. Recent typhoons, including Noul, which prompted the evacuation of nearly 900,000 people in Guangdong, have contributed to the extreme weather. Another landslide in Chongqing on July 30 killed at least 51 people after rocks collapsed onto residential buildings .
A magnitude 3.9 earthquake also shook the Murcia region in Spain on Sunday, with no reported damage but numerous emergency calls .
