Ronaldo leaves Portugal camp after clash with coach Jesus ahead of Nations League match

Cristiano Ronaldo left Portugal’s national team camp on Wednesday after a conflict with coach Jorge Jesus, departing via private jet to Madrid ahead of Thursday’s Nations League match against Denmark in Copenhagen.
The 41-year-old forward announced his exit on social media minutes after Jesus told reporters Ronaldo would train, despite missing three consecutive sessions. In his statement, Ronaldo said he decided to leave following a press conference by the coach and a conversation with the Portuguese football federation president. He pledged to reveal “the truth” about his reasons “at the appropriate time” and wished his teammates well .
Tensions escalated after Ronaldo was unused in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway on Sunday, the first time in 18 years he did not feature in a national team match. He had been substituted after 67 minutes in the opening 1-0 victory over Wales. Jesus said Ronaldo was not guaranteed a starting role against Denmark, stating, “If I need him, he’ll play. If I don’t, he won’t” .
Ronaldo’s sister, Elma Aveiro, criticized the treatment of her brother in an Instagram post, writing that he “deserved more respect” . Portuguese outlet *O Jogo* reported Ronaldo had made an “irreversible decision” to end his international career, though Ronaldo’s statement stopped short of confirming retirement .
Ronaldo holds the world records for most caps (234) and goals (146) in men’s international football. He debuted for Portugal in August 2003 .
