EU launches infringement proceedings against Latvia and Estonia over missed EU directive deadlines
The European Commission launched infringement proceedings against Latvia and Estonia on Monday for failing to transpose EU directives into national law, according to official announcements.
Latvia faces six separate cases, including the non-transposition of the new electricity market design rules on supplier choice and energy sharing, which member states were required to notify by July 17. The country also missed the August 5 deadline for the recast Hydrogen and Decarbonized Gas Directive, which updates natural gas market rules and introduces hydrogen infrastructure regulations. Additional cases involve the revised Anti-Trafficking Directive, due by July 15, and two directives on consumer repair rights for goods like smartphones and household heaters, with a July 31 deadline .
Estonia is among 18 member states receiving a letter of formal notice for failing to transpose the electricity market design rules. It is also cited, alongside Latvia and 24 other countries, for the hydrogen and decarbonized gas directive. Estonia additionally faces action over the sixth Anti-Money Laundering Directive .
The letters of formal notice mark the first step in the Commission’s infringement process under EU treaties.
