Norwegian authorities seized the Russian state-owned vessel *Professor Molchanov* in the port of Barentsburg, Svalbard, on Sept. 2 at the request of Ukraine’s national oil and gas company, Naftogaz. The action enforces a 2023 Hague tribunal ruling ordering Russia to pay Naftogaz $4.22 billion plus interest for the unlawful seizure of its assets in Crimea in 2014.
A Norwegian district court order on Aug. 31 authorized the seizure to secure payment of the debt, according to Naftogaz. Svalbard Governor Lars Fause confirmed the vessel would remain in Barentsburg until further notice, with local police executing the arrest. Fause’s office stated it would coordinate with Trust Arcticugol, a Russian state-owned mining operator in Svalbard, to ensure the safety of the ship’s crew and passengers.
Acting Naftogaz CEO Serhii Fedorenko called the seizure “another important step towards restoring justice for Russia’s unlawful seizure of Naftogaz assets in Crimea.” He added that the company would continue pursuing Russian assets globally until full compensation is paid .
The *Professor Molchanov*, a Russian state ship used for commercial expedition cruises, was anchored in Barentsburg when seized, according to vessel tracking data. Svalbard police confirmed the arrest under the court order .
