Bayern Munich star Musiala diagnosed with treatable absence seizures after collapsing twice in four days

Jamal Musiala, the 23-year-old Germany national team player and FC Bayern Munich star, collapsed twice on the pitch within four days, first during a test match against RB Leipzig on Saturday and again on Tuesday in a friendly against second-division side 1. FC Heidenheim. In both instances, Musiala was substituted in and collapsed shortly afterward, appearing disoriented before being escorted off the field .
Musiala later confirmed via Instagram that he has been diagnosed with “temporarily occurring but easily treatable absence seizures” caused by a “neurological dysfunction.” Absence seizures are brief lapses in consciousness, a form of epileptic episode, and are generally considered treatable with medication .
FC Bayern officials stated they had been aware of Musiala’s condition for months, with honorary president Uli Hoeneß telling Sky Sports that the club had received written confirmation from neurologists that there were “no concerns” about Musiala continuing to play high-performance sport. Hoeneß added that the first on-field collapse on Saturday was the first visible incident, and the recurrence on Tuesday came as a surprise .
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen confirmed the club had been in consultation with Musiala’s neurologists and doctors, who cleared him to play. “We are not only informed since yesterday or the day before,” Dreesen said, though he did not specify when the club first learned of the condition .
Teammate Harry Kane, speaking to BBC Sport, said Musiala was “going through a difficult moment” but remained focused on returning to the pitch. “He is doing everything possible to be his best version,” Kane said, adding that the team would support him fully .
Musiala’s condition has drawn attention to the broader question of epilepsy in sports. Medical experts note that absence seizures, while disruptive, are typically manageable, and many athletes with epilepsy can continue competing with proper treatment and precautions .
