Roger Federer was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, on Saturday, calling the honor “one of the greatest honours of my life.”
The 45-year-old Swiss, a 20-time Grand Slam singles champion, delivered an emotional speech during the ceremony, wiping away tears as he reflected on his career. “They call this the Hall of Fame, but fame was never the goal,” Federer said. “My goal was to spend my life doing something I love, with people who love it as much as I do.”
Federer, who retired in 2022, won a men’s-record eight Wimbledon titles, six Australian Open crowns, five US Opens and one French Open. He also earned Olympic doubles gold for Switzerland with Stan Wawrinka at Beijing 2008 and singles silver at London 2012, and was part of the Swiss team that won the Davis Cup in 2014. He spent 310 weeks as the world No. 1, a record later surpassed by Novak Djokovic.
During his speech, Federer shared lighter details from his career, noting he wore more than 5,000 headbands and “probably over 7,000 pairs of socks” between his 1998 debut and 2022 retirement. “That’s probably twice as many as most of my opponents, because I doubled them up,” he said.
He thanked his wife, Mirka Federer, his childhood idol Stefan Edberg, and “every ball kid who ever stood through” his matches. Mirka, who met Federer at the 2000 Sydney Olympics when both were professional players, joked that he had “zero titles” when they first met. She also recalled his immediate decision to leave the tour when she became pregnant with their first children, prioritizing family.
The ceremony drew a record crowd and included tennis legends such as Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, John McEnroe and Edberg. Federer was inducted alongside broadcaster and journalist Mary Carillo.
“Tennis meant the world to me,” Federer said. “Not just playing, not just winning, but creating something new.” He added that his connection to the sport endures: “I’m still writing my love letter to tennis.”
