Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS withdraws from 2027 Eurovision over Israels Gaza war participation
Dutch public broadcaster AVROTROS announced on Monday it will not participate in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, citing the event’s loss of neutrality due to the ongoing involvement of a participating country in a large-scale military conflict. The broadcaster explicitly referenced Israel’s continued participation amid the Gaza war as the reason for its decision.
AVROTROS General Director Taco Zimmerman stated that international conflicts have increasingly undermined the contest’s neutral character, turning it into “a platform for division.” He added that the Eurovision Song Contest was originally founded to connect people and countries but that its current state conflicts with AVROTROS’s values of trustworthiness, independence, and humanity .
The broadcaster has returned responsibility for Dutch participation to NPO, the Netherlands’ national public broadcasting organization. NPO confirmed it respects AVROTROS’s decision and will now deliberate on the country’s potential involvement in 2027, though it has not yet outlined next steps .
Eurovision Song Contest Director Martin Green said the EBU regrets AVROTROS’s withdrawal but will continue discussions with NPO to explore whether another Dutch broadcaster might take part. “We very much hope that the audience and artists in the Netherlands can still be represented at the Eurovision Song Contest,” Green said .
AVROTROS had previously boycotted the 2026 contest in Vienna alongside broadcasters from Iceland, Ireland, Slovenia, and Spain over Israel’s participation. The EBU recently introduced rule changes, including barring countries in armed conflict from hosting, but AVROTROS argued these measures do not sufficiently restore the contest’s independence and neutrality .
The broadcaster also pointed to the severe humanitarian situation in Gaza and restrictions on press freedom as factors contributing to the contest’s growing divisions. It has repeatedly called on the EBU to establish transparent criteria for the participation of countries involved in military conflicts .
The 2027 Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria .
