Andy Burnham, the UK Prime Minister, announced today a £8.4 billion funding package for the next phase of the Dreadnought nuclear submarine program during a visit to Barrow-in-Furness.

The funding includes a £5.9 billion contract for BAE Systems as the project moves into Delivery Phase 4. The remaining £2.5 billion will go to the wider supply chain. According to Downing Street, the investment will support 47,000 jobs and training places.

The funding was agreed under the previous government led by Keir Starmer, which increased the UK's defense and nuclear budget by £15 billion through the Defense Investment Plan. In pre-released comments, Burnham said the funding marks the start of a path towards a reindustrialized Britain, with "British money, spent on British workers, British firms and British skills, in the places that were written off for forty years."

The £8.4 billion is newly allocated within the £63.6 billion earmarked in the Defense Investment Plan over four years, which is £20 billion more than the previous four-year settlement. The first Dreadnought-class submarine, HMS Dreadnought, is expected to complete sea trials before entering service in the early 2030s.

During his visit, Burnham will unveil a new BAE apprentice scheme that aims to train 30 apprentices over the next three years. Officials describe the program as "trailblazing" and say it could be replicated elsewhere.

The announcement has drawn criticism on social media, with one post questioning the usefulness of the Trident renewal, stating that the Dreadnought program is not operationally independent of the USA and will not help defend the UK or its friends in the EU.

The program will allow the construction of four nuclear-powered submarines to strengthen the British nuclear deterrent. The first submarine, HMS Dreadnought, will conduct sea trials and be ready to enter service with the Royal Navy in the early 2030s. The second submarine, HMS Valiant, will also reach the sea trial phase, and construction will begin on the other two.
