EU bolsters security coordination as Lithuania urges airspace protection amid Russian threats: Big Tech lobbying surges in Brussels

The European Union is intensifying security and policy coordination as Russian threats and Big Tech lobbying pressure mount in Brussels.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius urged stronger EU airspace security during a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels on Thursday, calling it an "urgent priority" amid Russia’s war in Ukraine. Sinkevicius proposed a high-level security forum in Vilnius during Lithuania’s 2027 Council presidency to address eastern flank vulnerabilities, including funding for border protection and military mobility projects like Rail Baltica and Via Baltica .
Meanwhile, Ukrainian diplomat Rostyslav Palahusynets told the OSCE Forum for Security Cooperation that Russia’s hybrid operations—including airspace violations, sabotage, and cyberattacks—target EU and NATO members. He called for coordinated sanctions, deeper defense cooperation, and the use of frozen Russian assets to bolster regional security .
In parallel, Big Tech’s influence in Brussels has surged, with Google, Apple, and Amazon recording 302, 257, and 239 meetings with EU policymakers, respectively, since the 2024 elections, according to a Financial Times analysis. The sector’s lobbying spending reached €73 million annually, outpacing finance and energy, as the EU advances digital regulations like the AI Act and Digital Markets Act .
