UEFA is examining a complaint filed by Real Madrid against FC Barcelona over payments to a former Spanish refereeing official, the governing body confirmed on Thursday.
The European football authority said it had received “a substantial quantity of documents” from Real Madrid related to its ongoing investigation into Barcelona’s payments of approximately €8.4 million between 2001 and 2018 to companies linked to José María Enríquez Negreira, then vice president of Spain’s refereeing committee. UEFA stated that its ethics and disciplinary inspectors would review the materials as part of their existing probe .
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez had previously described the case as “the biggest corruption case in football history” and said the club submitted a 500-page dossier to UEFA. In a statement on Thursday, Real Madrid said its complaint included “abundant documentation and evidence of facts of extraordinary gravity that directly affect the integrity of competition and trust in the refereeing system,” urging UEFA to advance the investigation “with the utmost speed” .
Barcelona responded that UEFA had not opened a new case, noting that the existing file was launched in 2023 and remains active. The club said it had “always complied with all requests” from UEFA’s investigators . UEFA has previously stated it would not impose sanctions until Spanish courts rule on the matter, with a trial expected in 2027 .
