Romanian director Florin Șerban’s film *Nu e locul tau aici* (*You Don’t Belong Here*) won the Golden Leopard, the top prize at the 79th Locarno International Film Festival, on Saturday. The jury, led by Belgian filmmaker Fabrice du Welz, awarded the film for its “force of its writing, the singularity of its vision, and the exceptional mastery of its cinematic language,” according to a festival statement .
The 2.5-hour drama explores the fractured relationship between a widowed hospital director, Marius, played by Adrian Văncică, and his teenage son, Ioan, portrayed by debut actor Teodor Butănescu. The son’s involvement with a violent, xenophobic group strains their bond, culminating in a police investigation linking him to a murder. Butănescu received a special acting mention for his role .
In addition to the Golden Leopard, *Nu e locul tau aici* claimed three other awards: the Europa Cinemas Label Prize, the Young Jury Prize, and the special mention for Butănescu. It is the first Romanian film to win the Golden Leopard at Locarno and the first to secure four distinctions in a single edition, according to Romanian media .
Șerban, a key figure in Romania’s New Wave cinema, described the film as “above all a portrait of a way of seeing the world that might disappear—or perhaps should disappear.” He added that he had long dreamed of winning at a festival that rewards “pure cinema” . The Golden Leopard carries a prize of 75,000 Swiss francs (€79,700), split between the director and producer .
Other major awards included the Jury’s Special Prize for the Brazilian-German co-production *A Margem do Rio* (*The Riverbank*), directed by Matheus Farias and Enock Carvalho, which depicts a gay love story threatened by intolerance. South Korean filmmaker Hong Sang-soo won Best Director for *Nunduldega eomne* (*Nowhere to Rest My Eyes*), while Kim Min-hee received a gender-neutral acting award for her role in the same film. Italian actress Monica Bellucci won a second acting prize for her performance in *Ketticè* (*Chaos*) .
The festival’s international competition featured 17 films. The awards were presented in a ceremony on Saturday afternoon, with a gala under the stars introducing the winners to the public that evening . *Nu e locul tau aici* is scheduled for release in Romania in November .
