Ferry capsizes off northern Cyprus with around 270 people on board, multiple fatalities reported
A passenger ferry carrying around 270 people capsized off the coast of northern Cyprus on Sunday, triggering a large-scale rescue operation. The vessel, a catamaran-style ferry, overturned approximately 2 kilometers north of Kyrenia port shortly after departing for the Turkish port of Taşucu, according to Turkish Cypriot media and local officials .
Authorities confirmed multiple fatalities, though exact numbers remain unclear. Unal Üstel, prime minister of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, told Turkey’s state news agency Anadolu that “there are some fatalities” . Turkey’s ambassador to Nicosia, Ali Murat Başçeri, also stated that casualties had been recorded, adding that many passengers had been brought ashore .
Rescue efforts are underway, with coast guard vessels, helicopters, and other boats deployed to the scene. Murat Senkul, the mayor of Kyrenia, described the situation as “very serious” in a Facebook post and confirmed that a rescue operation was active . Turkish Cypriot Transportation Minister Erhan Arıklı told TRT that the ship had overturned and that rescue crews were already on-site . Video footage circulating on social media showed passengers in life jackets clinging to the overturned vessel as they awaited rescue .
The ferry, identified as the *Express* and operated by Filo Jet, began taking on water shortly after departure, according to TRT . Local reports indicated that at least 159 people had been rescued by Sunday afternoon . The Northern Cyprus Health Ministry stated that hospitals in the region had been placed on standby to respond quickly to the emergency .
The cause of the incident remains unconfirmed. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Larnaca announced it was ready to assist the operation, having contacted the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus for support . The ferry route between Kyrenia and Taşucu is a busy one, frequently used by multiple companies.
