PCP leader Paulo Raimundo warned Portugal’s Socialist Party on Saturday that approving the next state budget would empower the right-wing government and absolve the far-right Chega party of responsibility for its policies.
Speaking at the Avante! Festival in Lisbon, Raimundo said that if the PS enables the 2027 budget, it would confirm its “complicity with right-wing politics” and give the PSD/CDS government, Chega, and the Liberal Initiative more room to intensify attacks on public services. He stated the PS would then share responsibility for the dismantling of the National Health Service, cuts to public education, housing speculation, wage suppression, pension reforms, Social Security reductions, privatizations, and rising prices .
Raimundo also accused the government of pursuing a “disastrous policy” serving economic elites, adding that those who support it—including the PS, Chega, and IL—are equally censurable. He claimed the right seeks to “reconfigure, even tear up” the Constitution at the behest of capital, marking 50 years since its adoption .
The PCP leader’s remarks came as Chega prepared a no-confidence motion against the government, set for debate and vote on Tuesday. Raimundo declined to align the party’s agenda with others, emphasizing the need for a unified response to the government’s policies .
