Spain braces for first total solar eclipse in over 120 years with thousands expected in small villages
A total solar eclipse will darken parts of Spain on Aug. 12, the first such event visible from the Iberian Peninsula in over 120 years, according to multiple reports.
The eclipse has drawn intense public interest, with small villages like Somosierra, a mountain hamlet of 93 residents near Madrid, expecting up to 2,000 visitors for its 1 minute and 29 seconds of totality, said Irma López Muñoz, the village’s tourism manager. Authorities are coordinating with police and civil protection to manage crowds, parking, and resources, though the council has only offered 400 official registration slots .
In Valencia, the regional government has designated nine official viewing sites, including Aras de los Olmos, a municipality of 400 people preparing for over 10,000 visitors, said Jordi Cornelles, president of the Valencian Astronomy Association. Cornelles, who has never witnessed a total eclipse, described the event as “absolutely magical” and emphasized the need for safe viewing practices .
The Spanish government estimates the eclipse will attract 446,000 additional visitors, generating €347.6 million for the economy, according to El Mundo. Some travelers, like Carolina, a Spanish tourist, booked accommodations 19 months in advance to secure a spot in Galicia, while Kasya, a Polish visitor, planned her trip over a year ago to experience her first total eclipse .
Authorities have also prepared for logistical challenges. Spain’s traffic directorate, the DGT, announced special measures for Aug. 12, including route planning and staggered returns to manage the surge in travel to prime viewing areas .
Power grid operators expect a limited impact on solar generation, as the eclipse occurs near sunset, and have activated reserves and European coordination to ensure supply stability .
The event follows a South Korean satellite’s recent capture of a SpaceX lunar impact, with before-and-after images of the debris field published on Aug. 8 .
