Maresca prepares for first Manchester derby as City manager against struggling United
Enzo Maresca will take charge of his first Manchester derby as Manchester City manager when his side visits Manchester United on Sunday, with City aiming to maintain their 100 percent start to the Premier League season.
Maresca, who succeeded Pep Guardiola in the summer, has overseen three straight league wins, though performances have been inconsistent. City edged past Coventry 1-0 last weekend and required late goals to beat Bournemouth on the opening day. Despite the shaky displays, Erling Haaland has remained a reliable scorer with five goals in four games.
United, under Michael Carrick, have stuttered, collecting just four points from their first three matches. City have dominated the fixture in recent years, but lost at Old Trafford in Guardiola’s final game there last season.
Maresca downplayed the personal significance of the occasion. “To be honest, I’m more thinking about the team, the fans, the table,” he told reporters on Friday. “For sure, if we win, it’s also good for me. But the main focus is not ‘It’s my first derby and I want to win the game.’ For sure, I want to win the game, but it’s because we want to continue to win games.”
The Italian also addressed midfielder Elliot Anderson’s claim that City are the “kings of Manchester,” attributing it to the club’s dominance over the past 15 years. “The reason why Elliot said that is because he grew up in the last 15 years,” Maresca said. “Manchester City was unbelievable, what they achieved. So, I think it’s normal when Elliot said that.”
