A 12-year-old boy in Kansas has discovered an 80-million-year-old mosasaur fossil and plans to display it at the Sedgwick County Fair in July. The preteen, whose name has not been released, found the specimen during a 4H trip and has since spent at least 30 hours cleaning it, according to reports by *The Independent* .

The fossil, described as a "monster" by local media, will be showcased at the fair as part of the boy’s project, offering a rare public glimpse into prehistoric marine life. Paleontologists have not yet fully assessed the specimen, but its size and preservation suggest it could be a significant find for the region.

The discovery highlights the growing role of youth engagement in paleontology, with the boy’s enthusiasm drawing attention to Kansas’s rich fossil record. Sedgwick County Fair officials said the exhibit will include educational materials to contextualize the fossil’s scientific importance. The fair runs from July 10–17.

There is no greater joy than watching the unique and freaky ways my friends connect with each other | Rebecca Shaw In a world determined to isolate us, it is such a pleasure to connect two people I know and love and watch their friendship take offGet our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcastLast week I went to a beloved friends 40th birthday, and I got to witness something I deeply believe about friendship distilled in one room.Sitting around a table full of mutual friends, screaming and laughing in a way that would usually be annoying, the subject of how everyone had become friends with the birthday boy came up. Ill call him Ben.In each of my friends there is something that only some other friend can fully bring out. By myself I am not large enough to call the whole man into activity; I want other lights than my own to show all his facets.Rebecca Shaw is a writer based in Sydney Continue reading...

The Book of Birds by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris audiobook review – a love letter to our feathered friends This compendium of 49 of Britains threatened species features lyrical prose poems evoking each birds unique qualities and beautiful recordings of their distinctive callsThe Book of Birds delivers a stark warning in its introduction about the great thinning of the skies … Dawns and springs are quieter; the air emptier. An ancient avian orchestra is falling silent. There are now 3 billion fewer birds in North America than there were 50 years ago, and 5 million fewer in Europe. The biggest myth? That I got kicked out of Sister Sledge: Kathy Sledge on sibling rivalry, Chic and discos political power One of discos biggest stars answers your questions, recalling tours with Rick James, inspiration for Destinys Child and what she wished she asked Michael JacksonYou have been an active contributor to an astounding canon of music. What was the essential ingredient that made it all happen? eamonmcc
The first word that comes to mind is passion – for the music, for what I do. If you get to be the voice of a song like We Are Family, which is here for generations to come – to me, its more than a song, its a statement – it just blows my mind. We were the group that brought the world together as a family through a song.I reckon if you put a rocker, a pop fan, a metalhead, a hip-hop nut, a techno obsessive and a classical devotee into a room and put on Lost in Music, everybody would get down. Whats your own relationship with the song? DeJongandtherestless
The song were known for is We Are Family, but were really Lost in Music. That should be the theme song for Sister Sledge. Ive been doing this all my life, since I was 11 years old, but in order to survive the industry, there has to be a balance. There were times, especially in the early days, where we toured so much that we couldnt come up for air, and that, if anything, makes me relate to those lyrics. Continue reading...
