Barcelona agree deal to sign Spain captain Rodri from Manchester City

Barcelona and Manchester City have agreed on a deal for Spain captain Rodri, with the 30-year-old midfielder set to join the Catalan club for a fee reported at around £65 million to €76.5 million, according to multiple sources. The transfer, expected to be finalized in the coming days, will see Rodri sign a four-year contract with Barcelona .
The agreement follows a week of negotiations, with Barcelona initially offering £38.5 million, which City rejected. The final deal includes a base fee of €60 million, with additional bonuses potentially raising the total to €70-76.5 million . Rodri, who won the Ballon d’Or in 2024, will earn an annual salary of around €15 million at Barcelona .
Rodri joins Barcelona after seven seasons at Manchester City, where he made 298 appearances and won 12 major trophies, including four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three EFL Cups, and the 2022-23 Champions League. He missed much of the 2024-25 season due to a knee injury and parts of last season with a hamstring issue but returned to form at the 2026 World Cup, leading Spain to victory and earning player of the tournament honors .
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca acknowledged Rodri’s impact after the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, stating, “Rodri is a player who just won the World Cup and Ballon d’Or. He’s a top player, all the teams need a Rodri, so it’s not about if we miss Rodri or not” .
Barcelona’s push for Rodri intensified after Real Madrid appeared to be his likely destination. The club’s financial flexibility improved following Ferran Torres’ €48.8 million transfer to PSG, creating salary space for the deal .
Rodri’s arrival at Barcelona is the fourth signing of the summer under manager Hansi Flick, who may also benefit from the midfielder’s ability to fill in for the injured Frenkie de Jong .
Manchester City, meanwhile, has been linked with 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi as a potential replacement, with reports suggesting a fee of around £85 million. Bouaddi, who impressed at the World Cup and in Lille’s Champions League victory over Real Madrid in 2024, has held talks with City . The club has also shown interest in Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez but has not submitted a bid .
