A total solar eclipse will cross Spain and parts of Europe on Aug. 12, with the path of totality stretching from the Atlantic coast of Galicia through northern Spain and the Balearic Islands, according to multiple astronomical reports. The event will mark the first total solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula in over a century and the first in Spain since 1959, when it was only visible in the Canary Islands .
The eclipse will begin around 19:30 local time, with totality occurring near 20:30 and lasting up to 2 minutes and 18 seconds in some locations. The European Space Agency will broadcast live from the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory in Teruel, while NASA will also provide coverage across platforms . Major cities along the path include A Coruña, Oviedo, León, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Valencia and Palma, with the northern half of the peninsula experiencing totality while the southern half sees a partial eclipse .

The eclipse coincides with a planetary alignment of six planets visible before dawn and the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, which may be visible during totality under clear, dark skies . In Portugal, the total eclipse will be visible in the northeastern region, including the Montesinho National Park, where accommodations are reportedly fully booked .
Romania will also experience a partial eclipse, with the best visibility in northwestern cities . The solar corona, the sun’s outer atmosphere, will be visible during totality .
