Israel escalates strikes in southern Lebanon as Hezbollah launches record drone attack, killing at least 16. Overnight, Israeli forces conducted ground operations beyond the "yellow line" border, targeting Hezbollah positions in response to the group’s largest-ever drone assault on northern Israel, which killed an Israeli soldier, according to *La Repubblica* . Among the 16 Lebanese fatalities—including two children—were civilians in towns like Nabatiyeh, where Israel issued fresh evacuation orders despite an existing ceasefire, *France24* reports .

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to intensify attacks, framing the offensive as both a military necessity and an electoral strategy ahead of upcoming votes, *Süddeutsche Zeitung* notes . The Israeli military has ordered evacuations across multiple southern Lebanese districts, warning of imminent strikes against Hezbollah infrastructure, *Zeit* adds . Meanwhile, tensions with Lebanon’s government simmer, as negotiations with Israel stall over Hezbollah’s refusal to disarm, raising fears of a broader civil conflict, *taz* reports .

The violence underscores Israel’s expanding military footprint in the region: Al Jazeera’s findings reveal Israel occupies over 1,000 square kilometers of Lebanese, Syrian, and Gazan territory under direct rule, complicating any ceasefire . With U.S.-Iran talks ongoing but fragile, the risk of miscalculation grows—particularly as Hezbollah’s drone capabilities evolve, and Israel’s strikes push deeper into Lebanese territory.

Listen to the stories of Gazas women to fully grasp the horrors Israel is inflicting on us | Olfat al-Kurd I survived months of bombardment before escaping. The systematic dismantling of our home has harmed every aspect of womens livesOlfat al-Kurd is a field researcher for BTselem, the Israeli Information Centre for Human Rights in the occupied territoriesSince Israels assault on Gaza began in October 2023, I have lost my father, my brother, his wife and their daughter. They are still buried under the rubble. My house, where we lived with my husbands family, was destroyed by Israeli bombing. In 2024, after months of bombardments, flight and displacement, I managed to escape with my family to Egypt. Ive been living here ever since, but the memories of life in Gaza are always with me. What happened to me reflects the reality that Palestinian women in Gaza continue to face during the genocide.Since the start of the war, many women in Gaza have become sole providers. Countless numbers have been left with no protection or home, and many have lost children or their entire families. A recent UN report showed that Israel has killed more than 38,000 women and girls in Gaza during this war. A further 11,000 have sustained injuries causing lifelong disabilities.Olfat al-Kurd is a field researcher for BTselem, the Israeli Information Centre for Human Rights in the occupied territories Continue reading...

The real danger of Islamophobia? It rarely announces itself as hatred yet shapes how millions think | Kenneth Mohammed The difference in framing around antisemitism and anti-Muslim hatred distorts public understanding, inflames tensions and makes both Jewish and Muslim communities less safeThe horrific terrorist attack on the Islamic Centre of San Diego in California has been reported by many news outlets over the past few days. Yet as the story travelled across screens and news feeds, something more subtle unfolded: the language of reporting. Some outlets spoke of teen suspects and three deceased rather than murdered worshippers or a terrorist attack on a mosque. Words matter. They shape sympathy, urgency, and influence how violence is understood. Too often, the vocabulary of terror and extremism appears unevenly distributed; sharpened for some perpetrators but softened for others. There is a growing sense that the world is slipping backwards – not through dramatic rupture, but through the steady normalisation of hate, the coarsening of public discourse and politicians increasingly fuelling division and racism. 🇺🇸❌🇱🇧- U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on X: The U.S. stands firmly with the legitimate Government of Lebanon as it works to restore its authority and build a better future for all its people. Hizballahs threats of violence and overthrow will not be allowed to succeed. The era in which a terrorist group held an entire nation hostage is coming to an end. Marco Rubios official condemnation of Hezbollah: The United States condemns in the strongest terms Hizballahs reckless call to overthrow Lebanons democratically elected government. Hizballah has ignored repeated calls from the legitimate Government of Lebanon to cease its attacks and respect a ceasefire. Instead, it has continued firing on Israeli positions and moving fighters and weapons into southern Lebanon. This is a deliberate campaign to destabilize the country and maintain its power at the expense of the future of the Lebanese people. The Government of Lebanon is working to deliver recovery, reconstruction, international assistance, and a stable future for its citizens with the full support of the United States. Hizballah, by contrast, is actively trying to drag Lebanon back into chaos and destruction. The United States stands firmly with the legitimate Government of Lebanon as it works to restore its authority and build a better future for all its people.
