Masked mobs torch Belfast homes after stabbing attack sparks anti-immigration riots
Belfast awoke on Wednesday to smouldering ruins and displaced families after a night of anti-immigration violence triggered by a brutal knife attack that shocked the United Kingdom. Masked mobs torched homes, cars and buses across several neighbourhoods on Tuesday evening, forcing residents to flee as flames lit the sky over Northern Ireland’s capital. The unrest followed the circulation of graphic video footage showing a 30-year-old Sudanese refugee allegedly stabbing a 40-year-old man in a residential street late on Monday, an incident that police confirmed on Tuesday had left the victim with life-threatening injuries.
Hundreds of protesters, many wearing face coverings, gathered at multiple locations including the city centre, where a bus and several private vehicles were set ablaze and a building was engulfed in flames, prompting evacuations . Roads were blocked, public transport suspended and families barricaded themselves inside homes as rioters threw petrol bombs and bricks at properties belonging to ethnic minorities. Three Romanian families reported their houses had been vandalised, with the Romanian foreign ministry confirming that some now intend to return home .
The suspect, Hadi Alodid, appeared before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday charged with attempted murder of Stephen Ogilvie, threatening to kill an NHS radiographer on the same day and possession of a knife. Speaking through an Arabic interpreter, Alodid refused legal representation and made no reply to the charges . His address was given as Duncairn Avenue in north Belfast.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence as “shocking and unacceptable,” while the United Nations human rights office urged restraint and respect for the rule of law . Critics accused social media platforms of amplifying calls to protest, with Labour MPs singling out Elon Musk for sharing posts that encouraged people to take to the streets. Musk rejected the claim, instead blaming immigration policy for the tensions .
Relatives of the injured man issued a statement pleading for peaceful protest, saying they did not want the tragedy to be used to divide communities or fuel hostility . Authorities vowed to pursue those responsible, with police warning that organisers and participants in the disorder would face prosecution. The scale of destruction has raised fears of further unrest as tensions remain raw across Northern Ireland.
