EU's Costa urges bloc to tackle Europe's affordable housing crisis
António Costa, president of the European Council, called for greater EU involvement in addressing Europe’s affordable housing crisis during a speech in New York on Tuesday. Speaking at a breakfast event at the official residence of the New York mayor, Costa argued that ensuring access to affordable housing should not fall solely on national governments and municipalities, urging stronger engagement from the European Union.
Costa also highlighted his collaboration with the Mayors’ Coalition for Housing, a pan-European alliance of cities led by Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni. The coalition brings together local leaders to tackle housing challenges across the continent.
Upon arriving in Barcelona, Costa shifted to Spanish, praising the city’s efforts in housing with a playful remark: “Gracias, Pedro. Barcelona, campeón del mundo, y también del housing.”
