Dutch retailer Hema revives design contest to crowdsource next iconic everyday product
Hema has relaunched its design contest to create the next iconic product for the Dutch retail chain, inviting public participation to shape its future lineup. The competition, announced on Friday, calls for submissions of everyday items embodying the brand’s signature practicality and simplicity, with entries including concepts like the *Dubbeldoek*, *Lichtbij*, and *Pleistermaat* .
The initiative revives a tradition of crowdsourcing designs that have defined Hema’s product identity, such as the *meegroeirompers* (adjustable baby onesie), refillable lipstick, and the *fluitketelkonijn* (whistling kettle rabbit) . A separate article underscored the contest’s return, noting Hema’s products often evoke the reaction: “Why wasn’t this invented sooner?” .
The contest aligns with Hema’s broader emphasis on functional, timeless design, as reflected in the evolution of its logo from art deco to disco styles, mirroring cultural shifts . The chain’s flagship Amsterdam store on Nieuwendijk has also reopened with its full assortment available following renovations .
