Pogačar wins fifth Tour de France as wildfires force final stage cut short
The Tour de France concluded today with Tadej Pogačar securing his fifth victory amidst challenges posed by wildfires and extreme heat. The final stage, originally planned to cover 133 km, was shortened to 89 km due to the diversion of emergency services to combat wildfires in southern France.
Pogačar's dominance was evident throughout the race, with a significant lead over his closest competitor, Remco Evenepoel. His performance included setting new records on iconic climbs such as Tourmalet and l’Alpe d’Huez. Despite his overwhelming lead, Pogačar chose to support his teammate Isaac Del Toro in securing a podium finish, showcasing team unity.
The race was not without incidents. Colombian cyclist Einer Rubio of Movistar was involved in a serious crash on the Alpe d’Huez stage, resulting in his withdrawal from the race. Rubio collided with a car that had stopped abruptly to avoid hitting a spectator, sustaining multiple facial injuries and requiring hospitalization.
The shortened final stage in Paris consisted of circuits around the Champs-Élysées, with additional laps around Montmartre. Pogačar's victory places him alongside legends such as Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault, Eddy Merckx, and Miguel Indurain, all of whom have won the Tour de France five times.
Team officials and fellow cyclists have expressed their admiration for Pogačar's performance. Ralph Denk, team manager of Red Bull–Bora–hansgrohe, praised Pogačar's dominance while acknowledging the challenge of competing against him. Eddy Merckx, a five-time Tour de France winner, predicted that Pogačar would surpass the record of five victories.
The Tour de France this year was marked by extreme weather conditions and logistical challenges, highlighting the impact of climate change on major sporting events. Despite these obstacles, the race concluded successfully with Pogačar's impressive victory.
Pogačar's lead over Evenepoel was a substantial 6 minutes and 26 seconds, with Del Toro trailing by 9 minutes and 42 seconds. This victory marks Pogačar's fifth Tour de France win, tying him with legendary cyclists.
The wildfires in southern France have been severe, requiring the diversion of police and emergency services. This led to the shortening of the final stage, which was originally planned to start in Thoiry but was moved to the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
In addition to Pogačar's victory, Richard Carapaz of EF Education-EasyPost was named the most combative rider of the Tour de France. Carapaz won two stages in the final week and secured the polka-dot jersey for the mountains classification.
The race was also marked by the withdrawal of Jonas Vingegaard from Team Visma-Lease a Bike due to injury, which impacted the team's performance.
Team UAE Emirates XRG, Pogačar's team, faced some health issues in the final week but managed to maintain their focus and performance. Sport director Andrej Hauptman noted that there was no panic within the team despite the challenges.
Eddy Merckx, in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, expressed his admiration for Pogačar's climbing abilities and predicted that Pogačar would break the record for the most Tour de France victories. Merckx also mentioned that Pogačar could potentially win all three Grand Tours (Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, and Vuelta a España) in a single year, given the right conditions and team support.
The Tour de France this year was not only a test of athletic prowess but also a reflection of the challenges posed by climate change. The extreme heat and wildfires affected the race route and logistics, highlighting the need for adaptation in the face of changing environmental conditions.
