Pierre Gasly secured a shock first Formula 1 pole position for Alpine at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza on Saturday, edging out Mercedes’ George Russell by 0.060 seconds in a dramatic qualifying session. The Frenchman, who won at the same track in 2020 with AlphaTauri, delivered a final lap of 1:21.786 to claim the top spot, his first in 190 grands prix since his debut in 2017.
Gasly dominated from the opening segments, topping Q1 and finishing fourth in Q2 before sealing pole in Q3. His Alpine, optimized for low-downforce efficiency, excelled on Monza’s high-speed straights, a setup Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged as decisive. “They’ve done a great job; their car has no straight-line resistance, it’s a rocket,” Wolff said .
Russell, who had led much of Q3, settled for second, while McLaren’s Oscar Piastri qualified third but will start sixth due to a three-place grid penalty for impeding. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton will line up fourth and fifth, respectively. Gasly, who lives near Milan, called the result “unbelievable” and thanked the Tifosi in fluent Italian, noting Monza’s unique demands suited Alpine’s aerodynamic package .
The pole marks the first for a French driver since Jean Alesi in 1997, also at Monza. Gasly’s performance followed a lighthearted pre-qualifying chess match against Russell, which the Alpine driver won—only to joke afterward, “Turned out that it worked out well” . The race starts at 15:00 local time on Sunday.
