Butter goes viral on TikTok as food trends prioritise aesthetics over nutrition

Butter has become a viral sensation on social media platforms like TikTok. Videos of people eating butter straight from the block, stuffing dates with butter, and showcasing their favorite butter brands are going viral. This trend is part of a broader movement where food is increasingly used for visual appeal rather than actual consumption.
"Butter not as fat, but as an emotion carrier," says one source, highlighting the shift in how food is perceived and consumed in the digital age. The trend is not limited to butter. Social media platforms are filled with images and videos of food that are more about aesthetics than nutrition. This phenomenon, often referred to as "food porn," is driving a wedge between the visual appeal of food and its actual consumption. "The eye eats with you, but it can't taste," notes one source.
Meanwhile, the consumption of beer, another popular beverage, is also under scrutiny. While beer is often seen as a refreshing drink, especially in the summer, nutritionists warn about its caloric content. "Beer is consumed as if it were water," says nutritionist Fátima Branco. This normalization of beer consumption can lead to weight gain, as many people do not account for the calories in their drinks. According to Cerveceros de España, beer consumption fell by 4.4% in 2025 compared to previous years, with an average of 50.5 liters per person per year.
In the realm of health and wellness, weight loss drugs like Ozempic are making headlines. These drugs, originally developed for diabetes management, have been found to aid in significant weight loss. "We can help people much better than we could before," says Matthias Blüher, a professor of clinical obesity research at the University of Leipzig. The drugs work by mimicking hormones that regulate hunger and satiety, leading to reduced food intake. In the large approval studies, people lost around 15 percent of their body weight with Semaglutid and 20 percent with Tirzepatid.
However, the impact of these drugs goes beyond weight loss. Some users report that the drugs have changed their lives in unexpected ways, including boosting self-confidence and even leading to relationship changes. On TikTok, users share stories of how their weight loss has affected their personal lives, with some even coining the term "Ozempic divorce" to describe the phenomenon of relationships ending after significant weight loss.
But not all trends are about weight loss. In some parts of Africa, like Somalia and Kenya, the beauty ideal is the opposite. Women there are taking pills to gain weight, often at the expense of their health. This contrast highlights the diverse beauty standards around the world and the lengths people go to meet them.
Meanwhile, the social aspect of health is also being highlighted. A study suggests that having few friends can be as harmful to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. This underscores the importance of social connections for overall well-being.
In the food industry, the trend of using food as a visual prop is also evident. Luxury brands like Moschino and Louis Vuitton are launching accessories that mimic food items, such as pasta bags and pizza charms. This further blurs the line between food as sustenance and food as a fashion statement.
