EU urges US to reverse visa denial for Palestinian UN delegation ahead of New York meeting
The European Union on Saturday urged the United States to reverse its decision to deny entry visas to members of the Palestinian delegation ahead of next week’s high-level UN General Assembly session in New York.
The EU’s External Action Service said it regretted Washington’s move to maintain the restrictions for a second consecutive year, citing the U.S. obligations under its headquarters agreement with the UN. “In light of its existing headquarters agreements with the UN and its obligations as host state, we urge the United States for this decision to be reconsidered,” EEAS Spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said in a statement .
The U.S. State Department confirmed this week it was extending visa denials to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and other senior officials, including members of the Palestine Liberation Organization and Palestinian Authority, stating they had failed to meet commitments under U.S. law and engaged in activities Washington views as harmful to peace prospects .
On Sept. 17, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution allowing Abbas to address the session via video link after the U.S. denied his visa for the second year in a row. The measure passed 152-3, with four abstentions . Accredited members of the Palestinian mission to the UN can still attend in person.
