Israeli airstrikes on the southern Lebanese town of Kfar Rumman killed at least 13 people, including six children and three women, on Monday, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. The attack on a residential building occurred just before schooltime, with Reuters journalists at the scene reporting children’s schoolbooks scattered among the rubble.
A relative of the victims, Mona Farhat, told Reuters the strike hit her family’s home. “What did they target? What is the goal they are targeting? Do they want us to leave our land? They are mistaken,” she said at a hospital where her 8-year-old nephew, Mustafa Farhat, was being treated for wounds. The boy lost his grandparents and mother in the strike, while rescuers continued searching for his father’s body, locals said.
The Israeli military stated it had targeted individuals seen transferring weapons in Kfar Rumman and was reviewing reports that “uninvolved individuals” were harmed. It added that steps were taken to mitigate civilian harm, including the use of precise munitions and aerial surveillance. No evacuation warning was issued online before the strikes, according to local reports.
A separate Israeli drone strike on a civilian vehicle in the town killed one medic and wounded two others, the Health Ministry said. The attacks come amid escalating strikes in recent days, despite a June ceasefire intended to halt fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.
