The FBI is investigating a claimed breach of its jobs portal, FBIJobs.gov, after the hacking group ShinyHunters said it stole sensitive data on thousands of current and former employees, including personal details and professional assignments.
In a statement on Wednesday, the FBI confirmed it was “aware of a cybercriminal enterprise group claiming a compromise of the fbijobs.gov portal and alleged impact to FBI employee personally identifiable information.” The agency added that the point of breach remains undetermined but that it is “actively and aggressively investigating this matter” with third-party providers supporting the site .
ShinyHunters claimed on Tuesday to have obtained 2 to 3 terabytes of data, including names, addresses, phone numbers, and medical information of employees and applicants. Reuters reported seeing parts of the data, which included granular details on FBI officials’ work against Chinese and Russian intelligence, drug cartels, and other sensitive operations . The group said the attack was retaliation for a May FBI advisory that described ShinyHunters as “threat actors” who use exaggerated claims to extort victims .
The FBIJobs.gov portal was taken offline on Wednesday, with a banner briefly appearing on its homepage reading, “THIS SITE HAS BEEN SEIZED BY SHINYHUNTERS” . 404 Media verified parts of a leaked list of 5,000 alleged FBI officials, which included job titles such as Special Agent and members of the Remote Operations Unit, the FBI’s secretive hacking team .
