A series of fatal road accidents across Europe has left at least 19 people dead in Switzerland, Russia, Ireland, and Spain.
In Switzerland, a Dutch tour bus carrying 45 adults veered off the road near Susch in the canton of Graubünden on Thursday, killing five and injuring 40, three of them seriously. The bus collided with a guardrail before plunging off the road, according to the cantonal police. Authorities are investigating the cause and whether seatbelts were used . The Dutch ambassador in Switzerland said victims were scattered across nine locations and hospitals, while the bus driver, though injured, survived . The first victims are expected to return to the Netherlands this weekend .
In Russia’s Arkhangelsk region, a collision involving a minibus, a timber truck, and a passenger car on the M-8 highway killed 13 people, including two children, and injured eight others. The minibus, traveling from Severodvinsk to Bereznik, allegedly attempted to overtake another vehicle before striking the truck, according to the RIA news agency .
In Ireland, Margaret Connolly Irwin, a 60-year-old woman from Manister, Co. Limerick, died on Wednesday from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision on August 27 at Uregare Cross on the R512. She was transferred from University Hospital Limerick to Cork University Hospital, where she later died. A man in his 50s driving the other car sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses .
In Spain, a 28-year-old motorcyclist died in a head-on collision with a car on the C-59 in Caldes de Montbui, Catalonia, on Friday. The Mossos d’Esquadra and emergency services responded to the scene .
