Man dies and at least six injured as large sign collapses at UK Christian festival
A 41-year-old man died and at least six others were injured after a large sign collapsed at the Big Church Festival in West Sussex, England, on Friday, Sussex Police confirmed. The victim, from Eastbourne, East Sussex, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.
The incident occurred in the afternoon, prompting organizers to cancel the remainder of the festival, which had been scheduled to run until Sunday. In a statement posted on Instagram shortly after 5:30 p.m., organizers told attendees the event had been halted and all visitors “must leave the site now.” A later statement expressed devastation over the incident, which left one person dead and at least six others injured .
Detective Chief Superintendent Richard McDonagh of Sussex Police said the force is working with partners to determine the cause of the collapse. “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts go out to the man’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time,” McDonagh said. Authorities urged anyone with information or relevant video footage to come forward. The incident has been reported to the Health and Safety Executive and the local authority .
Earlier reports from Belgian and Dutch media had initially described six injuries from a fallen sign at a festival in Sussex, but the fatality was confirmed later by British authorities .
In a separate incident, Swiss prosecutors opened a criminal investigation into a fire in Thusis, Switzerland, that resulted in multiple fatalities. All victims have been identified, and one person remains in pretrial detention on suspicion of multiple counts of negligent homicide, according to Swiss public broadcaster SRF .
Meanwhile, in Spain, the deaths of an Irish couple found in a hot tub at a rented villa in Cullera, Valencia, are being investigated as a possible accident. Thomasina Tobin, 51, and her husband Patrick Tobin, 48, were discovered by their teenage children on Tuesday. Authorities suspect Thomasina may have been trapped by the hot tub’s suction mechanism due to an electrical fault, leading to unconsciousness. Toxicology reports are pending .
