Toddler killed in hit-and-run by jeep in Co Limerick, driver arrested on DUI suspicion
A two-year-old boy, named locally as Peter Mulcaire from Abbeycourt, Rathkeale, was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Co Limerick on Saturday. The child was struck by a jeep near his home around 4 p.m. while playing on a toy tractor, suffering catastrophic injuries. He was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick, where he was pronounced dead.
Gardaí arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant. The driver, who did not remain at the scene, was later detained at a different location and brought to a Garda station to provide a blood and urine sample before being released pending test results. Authorities clarified the arrest was solely for the purpose of obtaining the sample, not for questioning.
The investigation continues, with Gardaí collecting CCTV footage from homes in Rathkeale and appealing for dash cam or doorbell footage. A family liaison officer was assigned to support Mulcaire’s relatives. A community fun day in Rathkeale, scheduled for Sunday, was canceled “out of respect” for the boy and his family.
Relatives and neighbors shared tributes on social media, with one writing, “Never in my life seen sadder, may u get best bed Peter only a baby ... heartbreaking.” Another posted, “Rest in peace to our little neighbour Peter, may God comfort his family tonight.” Anyone with information is urged to contact Newcastle West Garda Station, the Garda Confidential Line, or any Garda station .
