Karoline Leavitt will step down as White House press secretary at the end of August, President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday in a Truth Social post. Leavitt, 28, cited a desire to spend more time with her family, including her two young children, as the reason for her departure .
Trump said Leavitt would transition to a role as one of his top outside advisers and remain “an influential voice within the Republican Party” ahead of the midterm elections . In her own statement, Leavitt called the decision “bittersweet” and said balancing the demands of the press secretary role with motherhood had been “the most rewarding yet challenging season of my life” .
Leavitt, the youngest person to hold the position, assumed the role in January 2025 at the start of Trump’s second term . She previously served as a speechwriter in Trump’s first administration, a campaign spokeswoman for his 2024 re-election bid, and a communications director for MAGA Inc., a pro-Trump super PAC .
During her tenure, Leavitt defended the administration through high-profile controversies, including the Signalgate scandal, the release of the Epstein files, and the Iran war . She also oversaw a shift in White House media access, expanding the press corps to include influencers and MAGA-aligned voices while criticizing traditional outlets for spreading “fake news” .
Trump praised Leavitt as “one of the best White House Press Secretaries in the History of the Office” and highlighted her work since 2018, including during his 2024 re-election campaign . Leavitt gave birth to her second child, a daughter, in May and returned from maternity leave before announcing her resignation .
The White House did not immediately name a successor. Leavitt’s departure leaves Trump without one of his most prominent communications advisers as the administration approaches the November midterm elections .
