OMV Petrom launches 140m aromatics unit, Orange rolls out 5G across Romanias coast

OMV Petrom on Tuesday inaugurated a €140 million aromatics unit at its Petrobrazi refinery near Ploiești, Romania, boosting petrochemical feedstock output and marking the largest single investment in the site since 2015. The new unit, commissioned on 23 June 2026, will process high-value aromatic compounds used in plastics, synthetic fibres and solvents, according to company statements carried by Euro-Petrole and Romania Insider . OMV Petrom chief executive Radu Căpățână said the facility strengthens Romania’s downstream integration and reduces reliance on imports of benzene, toluene and paraxylene.
In parallel, Orange Romania announced on the same day that 5G and 5G+ coverage is now live in every coastal resort from Constanța to Vama Veche ahead of the July peak season. The expansion, detailed in a company press release cited by Hotnews.ro , targets the high-density influx of holidaymakers whose simultaneous data demand can strain networks. “Concentrating a very large number of users in a confined space creates unique capacity challenges,” the operator noted, promising further small-cell densification in July.
The two announcements underscore divergent strategic priorities: OMV Petrom is locking in long-term industrial competitiveness, while Orange Romania is racing to meet immediate seasonal demand. Industry analysts point out that Petrobrazi’s new aromatics unit could lift Romania’s self-sufficiency in basic petrochemicals by up to 15% within two years, aligning with EU green-deal incentives for recycled-content plastics. Meanwhile, Orange’s coastal 5G rollout—already covering 98% of the litoral—positions Romania as one of the first Black Sea destinations with contiguous ultra-fast mobile connectivity.
Both developments arrive as the Romanian government finalises a national decarbonisation roadmap due for cabinet approval next month. OMV Petrom has pledged to publish a 2030 net-zero pathway for its Romanian operations by December 2026, while Orange has committed to powering all Romanian sites with 100% renewable electricity by 2027.
