A collision between two Turkish-flagged commercial vessels in the Marmara Sea early Wednesday left one ship missing with its 10 crew members, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation, authorities said.
The Istanbul governor’s office stated the incident occurred at 3 a.m. local time, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Silivri, a district west of Istanbul. The Tugberk Imamoglu, a 90-meter (295-foot) cargo ship en route from Iskenderun to Karadenizereğli in the Black Sea, lost contact with authorities after colliding with the Alsu, a 91-meter (298-foot) oil or chemical tanker traveling from Kocaeli to Aliağa on the Aegean coast. The Alsu showed no visible damage, according to the governor’s office .
“Numerous naval units from the coast guard’s Marmara and Bosphorus Command and a coast guard helicopter were dispatched to the scene,” the office said in a statement . Turkish maritime authorities later announced that efforts to re-establish contact with the Tugberk Imamoglu and its crew had failed, and the vessel was presumed to have sunk .
The Turkish Straits, which include the Bosphorus and Dardanelles, are among the world’s busiest shipping routes, with hundreds of thousands of vessels transiting annually between the Mediterranean and Black Seas . The Tugberk Imamoglu is owned by Zeybe Denizcilik and operates as a bulk carrier, while the Alsu, owned by Ozpulathane Deniz Taşımacılığı, is a chemical or oil tanker, according to the Istanbul Chamber of Maritime Commerce .
Search and rescue operations were ongoing as of Wednesday, with no further updates on the status of the missing crew. The Istanbul governor’s office confirmed that the Alsu remained afloat and undamaged .
