Madrid’s Plaza del Callao, the pulsating heart of the Spanish capital’s commercial and cultural life, has stood as a silent witness to a century of transformation—from its origins beneath the San Martín neighborhood to its current status as a pedestrianised icon at the crossroads of Gran Vía and Calle Preciados. The square’s origins trace back to the late 19th century, long before the construction of Gran Vía began in 1917. Named in honour of the 1866 Battle of Callao, the space was carved from the old San Martín district and expanded during the urban renewal that reshaped Madrid’s centre. By 1927, the square had taken its modern form, anchored by landmarks such as the 1928 Press Palace (Palacio de la Prensa) and the 1933 Carrión Building, both of which remain intact today. The Cine Callao, opened in 1927, further cemented the square’s reputation as a cultural hub, while the 1953 Edificio España and the 1960 Torre de Madrid—once Europe’s tallest skyscraper—added vertical drama to the skyline.
Commercial activity has always defined Plaza del Callao. In 1952, the Galerías Preciados department store opened on the site of the demolished Hotel Florida, its inauguration in 1960 giving the square its present-day appearance. Today, the square is flanked by Calle Preciados, Spain’s most expensive shopping street, and the El Corte Inglés flagship store, while the adjacent Fnac building (formerly Galerías Preciados) continues to attract crowds. The pedestrianisation of the square in 2009–2010, which rerouted bus traffic to Calle de Jacometrezo, completed its transformation into a pedestrian paradise.
Strategically located just metres from Puerta del Sol, Plaza del Callao is served by Madrid Metro’s Callao station (lines 3 and 5), making it a natural starting point for sightseeing. The square’s blend of history, commerce, and urban energy has earned it a place among Europe’s great squares, a status reinforced by its inclusion in the Madrid tourist office’s official itineraries .

It lies at the end of Calle del Carmen and divides Calle Preciados into two sections, as well as marking the beginning of the third section of Gran Vía, which ends at Plaza de España. The Plaza del Callao, like the second section of Gran Vía, (see post). This avenue has always been known for its bustling commercial activity, neon lights, and cinemas. The metro Callao station is served by lines 3 and 5. Line 3 runs from Moncloa to El Casar, passing through Sol Station, while Line 5 runs from Alameda de Osuna to Casa de Campo.The Plaza de Callao is an icon and one of the best places in Madrid to stroll, shop, or start a wonderful day of sightseeing in the city. At the end of the 20C, a square was built between Calle Preciados and Gran Vía, which quickly became one of Madrids most popular spots: Plaza del Callao. The La Adriática Building, designed in 1926: Gran Vía 39. The Fnac Building (formerly Galerías Preciados): a five-story post-war building occupied by the Fnac chain. Plazas, turnos y destinos que descubrir con los viajes del Imserso 2026 Los miembros del programa pueden visitar la costa penínsular, los archipiélagos o elegir el llamado turismo de escapadaCalaceite, el pueblo de Teruel donde se cruzan historia, literatura y cultura ibérica Descansar en algunas de las zonas costeras de nuestro país, visitar alguno de los archipiélagos, sumergirse en alguno de los circuitos culturales o conocer algunas de las capitales de provincia más importantes de nuestro país. Ese es el amplio abanico de destinos del que podrán disfrutar aquellos beneficiarios del Programa de Turismo del Imserso. La convocatoria de 2026 también está en marcha y se puede solicitar hasta el próximo 10 de julio. Según detalla el Ministerio de Derechos Sociales, Consumo y Agenda 2030, para esta nueva convocatoria se ofrecen 879.213 plazas y se reparten de la siguiente manera: 440.284 plazas en turismo de costa peninsular. 228.142 plazas para turismo en costa insular. 210.787 plazas para turismo de escapada. Todas esas escapadas tendrán un precio económico y asequible, para así cumplir con el propósito del programa, que no es otro que fomentar su autonomía, prevenir la dependencia y combatir la soledad no deseada en mayores. En paralelo, la administración buscar paliar la estacionalidad del sector turístico, evitando la pérdida de muchos puestos de trabajo durante la temporada baja. El objetivo del Ministerio de Derechos Sociales, Consumo y Agenda 2030 es que nadie se quede fuera del programa por falta de recursos, así que en esta convocatoria se reservarán un total de 7.447 plazas con una tarifa reducida de 50 euros por plaza. Una medida que se adoptó por primera vez el año pasado y que se mantiene. De esta manera, aquellas personas que reciban una prestación igual o inferior al importe de las pensiones no contributivas de incapacidad o de jubilación de la Seguridad Social podrán viajar pagando una cantidad fija de 50 euros por su plaza, sin importar destino, siendo el Imserso el que asume el resto del coste del viaje. Destinos de los viajes del Imserso 2026 De acuerdo con el texto publicado en el Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE), el programa ofrece los siguientes destinos de viaje: Zona Costa Peninsular: estancias de diez y ocho días en Catalunya, Andalucía, Región de Murcia y Comunitat Valenciana. Zona Costa Insular: estancias de diez y ocho días en Canarias y Balears. Turismo de Escapada: con estancias de cuatro, cinco y seis días en circuitos culturales, naturaleza, capitales de provincia y las ciudades de Ceuta y Melilla. Todas estas salidas se realizarán en régimen de pensión completa, excepto en el caso de los viajes a capitales de provincia, cuyo régimen será de media pensión. Los viajes, a los que tendrán acceso aquellos con plaza (nuevos o veteranos), se celebrarán entre el mes de octubre de 2026 y el mes de junio de 2027.
