A 49-year-old woman fatally stabbed one person and wounded another in New York City’s Times Square on Monday before being shot dead by police, officials said.
The attack occurred just before 4:30 p.m. near a New York Police Department substation outside One Times Square, a heavily policed and touristed area. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the woman, identified as Pamela Cisneros of Queens, pulled two kitchen knives from a shopping bag and stabbed a 68-year-old man in the abdomen as he exited a subway station with his wife. Seconds later, she stabbed a 32-year-old woman in the abdomen, Tisch said.
Both victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where the woman died. The man remains in stable condition, according to police. Authorities did not confirm whether the victims were tourists or residents.
Videos posted on social media show at least 10 officers surrounding Cisneros, who was holding two large knives. Tisch said officers spent several minutes trying to persuade her to drop the weapons before deploying a Taser, which failed to incapacitate her. Cisneros responded, “I’m not dropping anything, I would rather kill both of you,” according to Tisch. She then advanced toward the officers, prompting two of them to open fire.
Cisneros was struck and fell to the ground, where officers handcuffed her and administered first aid. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Tisch described the incident as an “extraordinarily dangerous situation” and noted Cisneros had a documented mental health history with the NYPD, including incidents in 2018 and 2019, but no prior arrests. She ruled out terrorism as a motive.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the families of the victims have been devastated by the attack. “We know that those families’ lives have been shattered by what took place today, and we will continue to hold them close as the hours and days and weeks continue from this moment,” Mamdani said.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released the names of the victims pending notification of next of kin. The area around Times Square was cordoned off following the attack.
