Márquez wins Aragon MotoGP to cut Martíns championship lead to 19 points
Marc Márquez won the Aragon Grand Prix on Sunday at MotorLand Aragón, securing his third consecutive victory at the track and narrowing the MotoGP championship gap to 19 points behind leader Jorge Martín.
The Ducati rider, who also won Saturday’s sprint race, overtook Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi on lap six after an intense battle, finishing 1.754 seconds ahead of KTM’s Pedro Acosta. Bezzecchi, who started from pole position, held third place. Márquez’s 77th career MotoGP win marked his fourth of the season and his eighth at Alcañiz, moving him to 237 points in the standings. Martín, who finished fifth, remains on 256 points, while Bezzecchi, now third overall with 232 points, trails Martín by 24.
“When I took the lead, I increased the pressure and built a comfortable advantage to remove any doubt about my victory,” Márquez said after the race. Bezzecchi described the duel as “strange,” noting the slipstream between the two riders at high speed. “Marc, with his experience and speed, was unbeatable today,” he added.
The race saw early drama as Márquez initially passed Bezzecchi at the first turn but lost positions due to a mistake with his bike’s rear ride-height device, which remained engaged after the start. He later recovered, executing a decisive overtake in turn 15. Acosta, who briefly challenged for the lead, settled for second, while Alex Márquez finished fourth, ahead of Martín, Fermín Aldeguer, and Fabio Di Giannantonio.
Francesco Bagnaia and Franco Morbidelli crashed out of the race, while Raúl Fernández retired due to mechanical issues. The next MotoGP round is scheduled for Sept. 11-13 at Misano for the San Marino Grand Prix.
