Global renewable energy expansion accelerated in the first half of 2026, driven by surging solar and wind capacity in Europe, China, and the Americas.
In the European Union, solar photovoltaic installations reached at least 33.8 GW in the first six months of the year, a 1.9% increase over the same period in 2025, according to a mid-year report by SolarPower Europe. The organization noted that solar provided over 20% of the EU’s electricity in May, June, and July, peaking at 25% in June and becoming the bloc’s largest power source that month. The report also estimated that solar had saved the EU over €30 billion in gas import costs during the first six months of the Middle East conflict .
China maintained its lead in wind power, installing approximately 120 GW of new wind capacity in 2025—more than Germany’s entire wind capacity—bringing its total to over four times that of the U.S. and nearly nine times that of Germany . In the Americas, Texas added nearly 54 GW of solar and 29 GWh of battery storage, with over 65% of its solar and 85% of its storage installed since 2023, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association .
Cuba reported 1.42 GW of installed solar capacity across 144 plants, with President Miguel Díaz-Canel stating the country expects to exceed 1.5 GW by year’s end. Over 563 MW of additional capacity was installed at consumer sites, with private-sector solar now covering around 20% of electricity demand. Díaz-Canel also noted 50 MW of energy storage is operational, with another 100 MW set to come online in October .
