NBC News helicopter crashes in Los Angeles, killing three on board and pedestrian
An NBC News helicopter crashed in Los Angeles on Tuesday while covering a traffic collision, killing three people, authorities and the network confirmed.
The aircraft, NewsChopper4, went down in Chatsworth in the San Fernando Valley as it filmed the aftermath of an earlier crash involving a city bus and an SUV that left two dead and six injured. The helicopter’s pilot, George Marciniw, and aerial photojournalist Eliana Moreno died in the crash, along with a pedestrian, 29-year-old Edy Gutierrez Mejia, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department and NBC4 Los Angeles .
NBC Los Angeles anchor Colleen Williams announced the crash on air, confirming the station’s helicopter was involved. The network and Telemundo 52 later issued a joint statement paying tribute to Marciniw and Moreno, both Southern California natives .
Veteran chopper pilot Zoey Tur posted audio footage on X, stating it captured a low rotor RPM warning and engine failure, suggesting a mechanical issue preceded the crash . The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed the aircraft crashed between two commercial buildings, with all three victims pronounced dead at the scene.
