The floods, triggered by a glacier collapse on Aug. 26, have devastated communities along the Nepal-China border, sweeping away villages and infrastructure. Authorities confirmed 781 deaths in Nepal and 16 in Tibet, with more than 3,000 people still unaccounted for as of Sunday. The Bhotekoshi River’s rising water levels prompted officials to urge residents in flood-affected districts to remain on high alert, according to Japan Today .
Rescue teams are racing to reach over 900 hydropower workers trapped in tunnels, including at the Trishuli 3A and Upper Trishuli-1 plants, where debris and flooding have blocked access. At Upper Trishuli-1, Indian worker Surendra Dowluri told Aftenposten that six colleagues were trapped by muddy water, with five rescued and one confirmed dead . Nepal’s Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai said the country needed more than 1,000 freezer units to store bodies, as morgues overflowed .
Mass burials of unidentified victims began Sunday in Chitwan district, where bodies had been carried nearly 200 kilometers downstream from the disaster zone in Rasuwa. Authorities collected DNA samples and documented grave locations to aid future identification, citing public health risks. The move sparked criticism from some Hindus over deviations from traditional burial rites, according to Tagesspiegel .
In Nuwakot, school principal Rajendra Dawadi evacuated 900 students minutes before floodwaters destroyed his school. Dawadi told dpa he received warning calls about 15 minutes before the flood hit and redirected school buses. “If we had made the decision to flee 10 minutes later, none of us—including the students and me—would be alive today,” he told the BBC .
Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal estimated reconstruction costs could run into billions of dollars and requested heavy drones, DNA equipment, and refrigeration units for body storage. Meanwhile, communities in Nuwakot and other affected areas returned to sift through mud and debris for belongings, with survivors describing entire settlements near rivers as “washed away” .
