Russia cancels Spasskaya Tower military music festival on Red Square until 2027

MOSCOW — The Spasskaya Tower International Military Music Festival, a high-profile event featuring military bands from Russia and abroad, was canceled on Monday, four days before its scheduled start on Aug. 21, organizers announced via Telegram.
The festival, held annually on Red Square near the Kremlin since 2007, was postponed to 2027 “for reasons beyond the organizers’ control,” according to the statement. No further explanation was provided, and the exact dates for next year’s event were not disclosed .
The Spasskaya Tower festival is one of Russia’s most prominent military-themed events, alongside the May 9 Victory Day parade and the Navy Day show in St. Petersburg. It was first held in 2006 and has been staged on Red Square since 2007, attracting thousands of visitors. The event was previously canceled only once, in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
The festival typically features performances by military orchestras and honor guards from Russia and other countries. In 2025, the event marked the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany and included 1,500 participants, with delegations from Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, and Burkina Faso, according to the independent media outlet Govorit NeMoskva .
Russian military units represented at past festivals include orchestras from the Defense Ministry, the Emergency Situations Ministry, the FSB, the FSO, and the Russian National Guard, as reported by the newspaper Vedomosti .
The festival’s name refers to the Spasskaya Tower, the main tower on the eastern wall of the Kremlin, which overlooks Red Square. The event was originally called “Kremlin Zorya” in 2007 before being renamed in 2009 .
