Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Nashville International Airport (BNA) announced on Friday that the airport will be renamed in honor of country music icon Dolly Parton, who died on Tuesday at the age of 80.
In a joint statement posted on X, Lee and BNA officials said the renaming would create a "lasting monument to her indelible legacy," according to a press release. Lee wrote that it was fitting for the airport to bear Parton’s name, as it is where Tennessee welcomes the world. "In a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is only fitting that BNA Airport carry the name of Dolly Parton," Lee said .
Parton, born on Jan. 19, 1946, in Sevier County, Tennessee, rose from a childhood in poverty to become one of the most celebrated figures in country music. After graduating in 1964, she moved to Nashville and began her career as a songwriter and performer. Her first single reached No. 24 on the country charts in 1967, followed by hits including "Jolene," "Nine to Five," and "I Will Always Love You," the latter later popularized by Whitney Houston .
Her agency confirmed on Tuesday that Parton died peacefully in Nashville. In a video posted on her Instagram, her family stated, "The sadness is with us, but not with Dolly. She lived her life." Tributes poured in globally, with flowers placed on her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where she was immortalized in 1984 alongside Sylvester Stallone, her co-star in the musical romance "Rhinestone" .
The proposal to rename the airport will be reviewed at a meeting of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority on Sept. 17, according to NBC News. A petition supporting the renaming, launched over a year before her death, had gathered more than 160,000 signatures by Friday evening. The initiative has also received support from a Nashville city council member and a Tennessee state legislator .
Lee said he discussed the proposal with Parton’s team this week, and her representatives expressed appreciation. "Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state," Lee stated. "From her home in the rural mountains of East Tennessee to stages around the world, Dolly carried with her the spirit of Tennessee" .
Parton’s music saw a surge in popularity following her death, with her songs streamed 79.7 million times worldwide on Wednesday, making her the most-streamed artist that day .
